How to get a Swedish Student discount card
A Swedish student card such as Mecenat or Studentkortet (among others) proves that you are an active student and gives you access to a range of student discounts and benefits throughout Sweden. Most student cards are available as a mobile app.
With a valid student card, you may receive discounts in:
- shops, restaurants, cafés and online stores
- discounted public transport fares
- reduced prices on train and bus travel
- discounts on culture and entertainment, such as cinemas, museums, and events
- special offers on software, technology, and subscriptions
- student rates for gyms and other services
To receive a Swedish student card, you must:
- Be actively registered on a course or programme at a recognized educational institution.
- Study in a programme that is eligible for Swedish student financial support (CSN). You do not need to receive CSN yourself; it is the programme's eligibility that matters.
Many students receive their student discount card automatically
Since many universities and other higher education institutions report the required student information directly to student card issuers, many students automatically receive their student discount cards.
If you need to apply for your student discount card
If you don´t have a student discount card, you will need to apply for it by submitting an application to a student card issuer. This includes uploading proof of registration.
- Apply through a student card provider, such as Mecenat, Studentkortet, or another student card issuer. Complete the application using the identification details, personal information, and study information requested.
- Log in to Ladok and download your Registration Certificate if requested (registreringsintyg). Applications that include the original PDF file from Ladok are often processed more quickly.
- Submit your application and wait for a decision. You will usually receive a response by email within a few working days.
If you do not have a Swedish personal identity number you can still apply.
- Use the temporary personal number or ID number shown on your registration certificate, if available.
- Or use your date of birth followed by four zeros (YYMMDD-0000).
If you have any questions or need assistance, we warmly recommend contacting the student card issuer directly. They will be able to provide the most accurate information and support regarding your application. Good luck!
