What should I do if a teacher favors certain students?

Some students seem to receive help and are treated warmly, while others are met with sighs and are practically ignored. During an assessment for one part of a course, the “favorites” were passed even though they received unauthorized help from their friends. Every day I see certain teachers favoring some students over others, and it makes me feel uncomfortable on campus. I feel like there is no point in attending lectures because I do not feel welcome.

Thank you for contacting us about your study situation.

It sounds like you feel overlooked and less welcome than other students, and I understand that this has a negative impact on your well-being, motivation, and overall study environment.

All students should be treated with respect and given equal opportunities in their education. If you feel that there are shortcomings in equal treatment or that examinations are not conducted fairly and in accordance with academic regulations, there are several ways to raise these concerns.

You can contact the course coordinator, director of studies, or a student representative to share your experiences, and you can also describe what you have observed in course evaluations. There are established procedures at all higher education institutions for investigating and addressing formal complaints. If you decide to file a formal complaint or raise a concern, it is helpful to document specific incidents, including dates, circumstances, and the people involved.

It is understandable that frustration about perceived unfairness can affect your motivation and energy. While seeking support, for example through a student representative, it may be helpful to remind yourself of the goals and reasons that motivated you to begin your studies in the first place. Your experiences of unfair treatment may understandably evoke frustration and disappointment, but it is important not to let them prevent you from continuing your education. Consider what is important to you about your studies, what you hope to achieve, and how you can stay focused on your own path toward those goals when things feel difficult.

You may also wish to contact your local student health service for support in managing the situation and maintaining your well-being during your studies. They may also be able to provide information about available options for addressing your concerns.

Best wishes,
